The ‘Barbie’ Movie: Is It Appropriate for Kids?

Is the ‘Barbie’ movie appropriate for children? This question seems to be going around now that the highly anticipated movie has been released. Barbie is known by people all around the world, however, typically it is for little girls. Dreaming, imagination, playing house, inspiring them to be whatever they choose to be. These are the things that the doll represents. With that being said, many parents and guardians are wondering whether or not they should take their little ones to see the film.

On the day of the release, I headed to the AMC theaters to watch the movie. I have to admit that I was excited to see the movie. I too, was a young girl who loved Barbie and the color pink. In my mind, I had the perfect outfit that I planned on wearing. A magenta pink tube top dress with a purse and heels to match. As the time neared, I opted to change my outfit to a black mini skirt with a matching blouse and pink accessories. I then went on to purchase my ticket online, only to find out that the time I wanted was sold out. I purchased a ticket for a showing a few hours later and took a nap, all dolled up like sleeping beauty. When my alarm woke me up a few hours later, I was over it. I changed into leggings and an oversized hoodie with combat boots. I felt like I let all the Barbies of the world down, but comfort was king at this point.

The movie. Should parents bring their children to see the film? It is rated PG-13 and I agree with that rating. If you have not had the birds and the bees talk with your child, you may want to watch it for yourself first to see if it is appropriate for them. Personally, if I had my children with me when I went, I would have cringed at certain scenes. There are certain suggestive and comical implied things that are obvious for older teens and adults to catch. There was only one curse word that was creatively bleeped out, but everything else was suggestive. There is also a dark theme that emerges throughout the film. It is a very good movie, the best movie of the summer I would say but I would advise parents to stick to the PG-13 rating. It can be mistakenly taken for a girly, pink, fairytale movie but it is not a Disney movie. I’d argue that it is for mothers more than their little girls. Awesome film. 1. I would not have thought twice about a Barbie movie not being for kids. This definitely makes you think twice about movies that seem innocent enough.
